They stand this day according to Your ordinances, for all things are Your servants. Psalm 119:91We must reflect on the previous verse to understand the first statement in this verse.
Your faithfulness continues throughout all generations; You established the earth, and it stands. Psalm 119:90The psalmist is continuing his remarks about God’s role in establishing the earth. The fact that God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things is based on what God has ordained. He is in control of all things and perfectly accomplishes all of His purposes. The psalmist then makes it clear that everything is ultimately a servant of God.
For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Colossians 1:16–17
Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, “My purpose will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure”… Isaiah 46:9–10As sinful people living in a sinful world, it can seem as though life is both random and chaotic. And yet the psalmist reminds us that this is far from the truth. God is very intentional and will perfectly accomplish all He intends. Even the wicked are not beyond God’s control!
The Lord has made everything for its own purpose, even the wicked for the day of evil. Proverbs 16:4And the greatest nations and powers on earth cannot thwart God’s plans.
The Lord nullifies the counsel of the nations; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart from generation to generation. Psalm 33:10–11We can be encouraged, even when we cannot understand all that God is doing, because we know He is in control.
