I have not turned aside from Your ordinances, for You Yourself have taught me.
Psalm 119:102
The psalmist understands the relationship between God’s ordinances and God Himself. It is so easy to approach God’s word with a lack of seriousness and gratitude. It is a remarkable thing that God has actually made it possible for us to know Him through His word.
Paul reminds us that it is through the ministry of the Holy Spirit that we can actually understand God’s word. He instructs us! The natural man does not have the capacity to comprehend spiritual truths (1 Corinthians 2:12-14).
Paul commended the church at Thessalonica because they understood the correlation between the message that was preached and the word of God.
For this reason we also constantly thank God that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but for what it really is, the word of God, which also performs its work in you who believe.
1 Thessalonians 2:13
The psalmist is committed to keeping the ordinances because he knows they are God’s ordinances. We must have the same perspective concerning God’s word. The fact that God is teaching us through His word should result in a very serious commitment to obedience.
All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.
