I have done justice and righteousness; do not leave me to my oppressors.
Psalm 119:121
The psalmist has been careful to use his authority to judge righteously. It has often been the case throughout history for a man of authority to use his power for personal gain. Justice varied based on one’s personal benefit.
While the psalmist was able to bless those under his charge by serving righteously and justly, he is requesting that the One with ultimate authority might grant him the same benefit. The psalmist has constantly been harassed by those who have no interest in justice. They are wicked and unjust people who have no regard for righteousness.
The psalmist knows God alone can protect him from his oppressors. It is his knowledge of God’s justice and righteousness that serves as the impetus for the psalmist to practice those very things with the people under his charge. It makes sense that the psalmist would want to practice these things and would also trust God to provide these same benefits to him.
As Christians, we must always seek to emulate our Lord God. At the same time, we can also trust Him to act according to His own character.
