I have inherited Your testimonies forever, for they are the joy of my heart.
Psalm 119:111
“Forever” is a very hard concept to grasp. When we look forward, time often seems to move quite slowly. When we look back, it seems to go so fast! The psalmist is delighting in the fact that not only is God’s word eternal, it is also his inheritance. That is, God’s word has become the psalmist’s eternal possession.
We have the privilege of benefiting from God’s word as we walk through this life. It will also be a rich blessing throughout eternity. And we will also be spending eternity with the One who is identified as “the word became flesh” (John 1:14a).
The psalmist’s joy is intimately associated with God’s word.
I rejoice at Your word, as one who finds great spoil.
Psalm 119:162
Reading God’s word must not simply be a necessary discipline in the Christian life. It is God’s word that brings us joy. It is a resource to be cherished. There is nothing on this earth that can compare to its value.
The prophet, Jeremiah, is very descriptive when expressing how precious God’s word is.
Your words were found and I ate them, and Your words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart; for I have been called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts.
Jeremiah 15:16
